Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one letter of condolence from Major Bruce Atlee Hunt to Private Cox’s mother, Mrs Mary Cox. In his letter, dated 18 October 1944, Major Hunt extends his sincere sympathy and describes the circumstances in which he first met Private Cox in F Force. He then goes on to write about Private Cox’s good work as a medical orderly, his cheerful nature, and his illness, death and burial.
Private Alan Stowell Cox enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 18 June 1940. He served with 2/10 Field Ambulance in Malaya, but was taken as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in early 1942. In April 1943, he was appointed to the medical section of F Force, one of the groups of prisoners sent to work on the Thai-Burma Railway. Private Cox died of illness on 28 January 1944 at Tanbaya Hospital Camp, Myanmar. He is buried at the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar.
