Henderson, W J (b.? - d.?)
Collection relating to the Second World War experience of W J Henderson, manager of Cable and Wireless Ltd, Darwin, 1942.
The collection consists of:
1 x seven-page typed account entitled "Wartime experiences of the Staff of Cable and Wireless Ltd, Darwin" by W J Henderson, Late Branch Manager, Darwin, with an additional page dated 1957 from a Malcolm Tregenza of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (Australia), thanking Mrs Henderson for sharing Mr Henderson's account of the bombing of Darwin. The account is a brief overview of the bombing of Darwin from the point of view of the members of Cable and Wireless Ltd. It discusses how they were struck by shrapnel and rocks, and all of the alarms and safety precautions that they undertook; and
1 x twenty-page handwritten account of the bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942 on an 'Air Mail / Featherweight Paper / Writing / Pad', with an image of a Short Sunderland on the cover. The account largely discusses the same incident as the typed letter, however in much more detail and, in differing from the other letter, mentions attempts to repel Japanese forces.
