History / Summary

This medal relates to the service of Ben Thomas Skinner in the Australian Army during the Second World War. Skinner was born in September 1922. His father died in 1938 when Ben was 16 years old. Ben joined the Militia in New South Wales during the Second World War and was assigned the regimental number N228823.

In February 1944 he joined the AIF 'in the field' in New South Wales and his regimental number was changed from to NX192157. He served in New Guinea with the Australian Army Service Corps. He discharged from the Army at the rank of Private in November 1944 whilst serving with 14 Company Australian Service Corps. He died in August 1972 at the age of 49.

His father, Leslie Benjamin Skinner served in the First World War on both Gallipoli and the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1918 for his battlefield actions with 4 Battalion AIF in late 1918. His father's Military Medal and service medals also reside in the National Collection as REL44971.001-.003.
