Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Brian More O'Sullivan (left) and 2nd Lt George Lush Finlay, 7th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion taken on the day of their embarkation. Both men embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Demosthenes on 16 July 1915. 2nd Lt O'Sullivan, a medical student from Richmond, Victoria prior to enlistment, later transferred to the 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery and was promoted to Captain. He returned to Australia on 9 March 1917 in order to complete his medical studies. Later rejoining the 5th Battalion he re-embarked for overseas service from Melbourne on HMAT Beltana on 19 January 1918. Subsequently wounded in action, he died on 23 August 1918 as a result of his wounds and was buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France. 2nd Lt Finlay, an accountant from Auburn, Victoria prior to enlistment, became ill whilst serving at Gallipoli and returned to Australia on 9 February 1916 suffering from enteric fever. Following his recovery he re-embarked for overseas service with the 19th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 28 July 1916. Later promoted to Captain, he was awarded the Military Cross. Following the Armistice he was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia and pleurisy. On 9 February 1919 he succumbed to his illnesses and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. His brother, Lieutenant William Seymour Finlay, 24th Battalion, was killed in action at Gallipoli on 29 November 1915.
