Studio portrait of 415 Private (Pte) Samuel John Free, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion. A farmer from Lalbert, Victoria, Pte Free enlisted on 24 July 1916 and embarked from Melbourne on 20 October 1916 aboard HMATPort Lincoln A17. Pte Free died of wounds aged 25 at Villers Bretonneux, France, on 26 May 1918. His brother 414, Pte Albert Ernest Free of the same unit was killed in action on 12 October 1917. (see P10577.002)
