Native Head
Description
Ralph Trafford Walker's sculpture "Native Head", 1949, plaster. The image depicts a sculpture of the head of a member of the New Guinea Infantry Battalion, with the artist noting that he was from a district where the heads of children were bound, causing an elongated effect. The black and white image, with its emphasis on light and shade typifies Max Dupain's artistic style. The photograph was taken for the Australian War Memorial's publication "As You Were 1949" and appears on page 52.
