Description

Group portrait of three members of the 13th Light Trench Mortar Battery. The sergeant on the far left has a Military Medal and Bar and is possibly 2234 Sgt Charles Thompson MM. Positively identified in this photograph is 3750 Corporal (Cpl) Robert Chaffey Stuart (far right). A labourer from Naracoorte SA, he embarked with the 12th Battalion in December 1915, was transferred to the 52nd Battalion in March 1916 with the 'doubling' of the AIF, and then to the 13th Light Trench Mortar Battery in July of the same year. In January 1919 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, and returned to Australia in May of the same year. See also P10550.133 and P10550.596.
