Carrying harness for 3 inch mortar barrel
Description
Khaki cotton webbing number 1 harness for the 3 inch mortar. Harness comprises a shoulder pad with a reinforced stiffening plate inside a linen cover on a sling. At one end of the sling is a 90cm steel ring, and at the opposite end is a leather strap and single buckle system. The harness is stamped with 'HNS MTR No1 P&G LTD 1943'.

Example of the type of mortar carrying equipment used by a mortar crew. The 3 inch mortar could be divided into three major sections for man transport. Number 1 harness was designed to carry the barrel component, as the steel ring is attached to the breech end and the buckle and leather strap supports the barrel in place.
