Description
Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Herbert Crowther Foxton (left) and 2nd Lt Cecil Arthur Auchterlonie MC and bar (right), 25th Battalion. Lt (later Captain) Foxton, a watchmaker from Ireland, enlisted in Toowoomba, Queensland. He was gassed in October 1917 and later suffered serious shrapnel wounds to his face in July 1918. He was sent to hospital in England where he underwent a series of operations to reconstruct his face (see AWM photos P06131.001 - .012). Captain Foxton returned to Australia in 1921.
2nd Lt (later Lt) Auchterlonie, a clerk from Gympie, Queensland, was awarded the Military Cross for actions near Villers Bretonneux in July 1918. Later that month he was awarded a bar to his Military Cross. He was killed in action on 10 August 1918.
