Description
Portrait of 5 Corporal (Cpl) James Douglas McDowall (left) and 7 Sergeant (Sgt) Robert Edward Charles MSM (right), both of the 29th Battalion. A carpenter from Melbourne, Sgt Charles enlisted in March 1915 at 20 years of age. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in June 1918 for his hard work and resourcefulness as a sergeant cook, and returned home to Australia in May the next year.
