Studio portrait of VX32311 Private (Pte) Edward John Thomas Hinch, 2/21 Battalion. Pte Hinch, from Goroke, Victoria, was aged 29 when he enlisted. His battalion was deployed to Ambon, New Guinea, on 13 December 1941 as part of Gull Force. Pte Hinch served with 'C' Company Mortar Platoon and was stationed at Laha airfield. As a result of the fighting with the Japanese between January and February 1942 he was taken prisoner of war (POW). Pte Davidson was executed on 20 February 1942, along with with approximately 300 others, in an event known as the Laha massacre.
