Full dress tunic: Major Henry Venn King, Queensland Mounted Infantry
Salmon pink, or drab wool twill tunic with crimson stand collar and pointed cuffs. Upper edge of collar decorated with gold lace and braided eyes and lower edge with gold Russia braid. Queensland Mounted Infantry badges at each collar edge. Twisted round gold cord shoulder straps each with embroidered bullion and velvet crown for the rank of major, embroidered bullion 'Q' and small Queensland Defence Forces button. Pointed crimson cuffs decorated with two chevrons of gold lace, Russia braided eyes and Austrian knot above and crowsfoot and eye traced with Russia braid below for the rank of major. Unpleated breast pockets with single pointed flaps fastened with small gilt Defence Forces buttons. Eight gilt Queensland Defence Forces buttons at front; seven large ones made by 'HOBSON & SONS LONDON' and one smaller one at waist made by ' HEBBERT & Co. LONDON'. Skirt slightly rounded at front. Two large gilt Defence Forces buttons at back waist above two closed vents piped with crimson wool. Brass belt hook at left waist. Body of tunic lined with quilted green wool and cotton mixture with concealed pocket inside left breast lined with brown cotton twill. Skirt lined with cream superfine wool. Sleeves lined with printed white cotton twill. Collar lined with grey wool and cotton mixture with small white shell button sewn at right side to secure stiffened wool tab at neck. Maker's label tag sewn to back neck. Neck fastens with two brass hooks and eyes. Two visiting cards belonging to Major Venn King in left breast pocket.
Worn by Major Henry Venn King, Queensland Mounted Infantry. King was born in 1842 and as a captain in the Mounted Infantry, was sent to Charleville and Cunnamulla during the 1891 shearer's strike. He was promoted to major in 1894 and in 1897 led the Queensland contingent to England for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. King was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1899. In 1903 he commanded the 14th Australian Light Horse for a short period and in 1904, the 5th Light Horse Brigade as colonel. After a period on the retired list he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Light Horse in 1913. At the age of 73 he was officer commanding the 2nd Remount Unit in Egypt from 1915 to 1916. He retired in 1921 and died in Toowoomba in 1929.
