Informal portrait of 17093 Captain (Capt) John White. Capt White took over the command of the 11th Mobile Strike Force (Mike Force), Da Nang, in February 1968, as part of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV), responsible for training and advising South Vietnamese Army units. Commanding a mixed force of 213 soldiers from the United States Special Forces, Vietnamese Special Forces, Civil Irregular Defence Group (CIDG), United States Marine Corps (USMC), and Vietnamese mercenaries of Chinese origin, Capt White was tasked with establishing contact with the 2nd Division of the North Vietnamese Army from the Special Forces camp of Kham Duc (also known as Ngok Tavak). Capt White was the Commanding Officer during the Battle of Ngok Tavak, 10 May 1968, which included close hand to hand fighting, along with grenade attacks and heavy machine gun fire against the North Vietnamese Army, resulting in an estimated 57 casualties for the 11th Mike Force.
