Studio portrait of QX19120 Lieutenant (Lt) Desmond King MacDonnell, 2/31 Battalion. Lt MacDonnell enlisted in Cairns on 24 April 1941. He died of wounds in Papua on the Kokoda Trail on 14 September 1942, aged 28 years old. His identical twin brother, Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Gordon MacDonnell, 603 Squadron RAF, was recorded as missing in action following an air battle off the coast of Turkey on 14 January 1944. He was later presumed to have died during this incident.
