Hazen, Mervyn Ernest (Private, b.1893 - d.1917)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 5341 Private Mervyn Ernest Hazen, 21 Battalion. Collection consists of 18 original letters written by Private Hazen to his mother during 1916-1917. The letters discuss the voyage on HMAT Themistocles in 1916, including activities such as the 'crossing the line' ceremony, games, sports, concerts and a fancy dress carnival. Letters from England mention training, football matches and a brief discussion of the conscription referendum. Private Hazen died of gunshot wounds received in France on 21 March 1917, aged 23 years. The collection also includes an inventory of Private Hazen's effects sent home to his family after his death and a copy of his diary.
