Gas shell marker : Imperial German Army
Description
Circular piece of cardboard covered on one side with black paper and marked with a yellow cross. A small hole in the top of the circle has a length of steel wire looped through it.
History / Summary
During the First World War these distinctive circular markers were used by German artillery gunners to differentiate ammunition types such as high explosive or gas shells.
When attached to a wooden peg (REL/00528.001) this marker was used to indicate a supply dump of German mustard gas shells.
