Description

Royal Australian Navy (RAN) midshipman's navy blue superfine wool undress trousers. A welt pocket has been let into the side of both hips at the top of the side seam. The buttons on the waistband, to take braces, and the slightly smaller ones on the concealed fly are made from black plastic. The inside of the waistband is lined with yellow cotton fabric.

History / Summary

These trousers were worn by Midshipman Thomas Milner, RAN, between May 1934 and September 1936, when he was appointed acting sub-lieutenant. He was made a substantive sub-lieutnenant in March 1937. Milner was invalided out of the navy in early 1939 after a rugby accident. During the period 1934-1939 he served on HMAS ships Australia and Canberra, and underwent further training at HMAS Cerberus and with the Royal Navy in England.
