MELBOURNE, VIC. 1943-06-16. VICTORIA BARRACKS WAS INITIALLY ADMINISTRATIVE HEADQUARTERS FOR THE WHOLE OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY. DURING WORLD WAR II, IN ORDER TO CO-ORDINATE THE THREE SERVICES MORE CLOSELY, IT BECAME NECESSARY TO ACCOMMODATE THE ADMINISTRATIVE HEADQUARTERS OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY AND THE RAAF IN THE SAME AREA. TO DO THIS A NUMBER OF NEW BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED IN THE GROUNDS. VIEW OF LEFT HAND WING OF VICTORIA BARRACKS, FACING ST. KILDA ROAD. NOTE WORLD WAR I ARTILLERY PIECE ON LAWN.
