The sinking of HMS Triumph
Description
Depicts a large ship, on the left, with crew members on the deck and a fire at the rear of the ship, which is beginning to sink into the sea. The sinking ship depicted is likely to be HMS Triumph , a British battleship that was sunk after being torpedoed by a German submarine off Gaba Tepe, Turkey, after it attempted to shell turkish positions in May 1915 . The large ship is surrounded by several smaller picket boats. The drawing was done during the First World War by Lt. D.M. Elliott, 11th Battalion, who enlisted in Melbourne in September 1914 and died of wounds on 18 September 1918 near Roisel, France.
