Images of war: a book of poems by Richard Aldington
A book of poems by British poet and novelist Richard Aldington (1892-1926), published by Beaumont Press, London, 1919. 48 pages of poems, with cover design and eleven hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by British modernist artist Paul Nash. The illustrations are on pp. 5, 13, 16, 18, 21, 22, 28, 30, 32, 40, 41.They depict scenes such as 'In the trenches', 'A ruined house' and 'Terror', portrayed in a semi-abstract style,and taken from black-and-white sketches that Nash inscribed with suggestion for colours. These sketches are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. There are copies of this book without the hand-colouring at the Minories, Colchester and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. 'Images of war' was Aldington's second volume of poetry. This edition is the seventh issued by the Beaumont Press and the third printed by hand. 30 copies have been printed on Japanese vellum signed by the author and artist and numbered 1 to 30, 50 copies on cartridge paper numbered 31 to 80 and 120 copies on hand-made paper numbered 81 to 200. This copy is printed on cartridge paper and is no. 37 in the total edition of 200.
