Lieutenant John Merivale
Description
This watercolour portrait depicts John Laidley Merivale mounted on horseback, wearing the uniform of the Australian Light Horse. Merivale enlisted as a private in the 6th Light Horse Regiment at Liverpool, New South Wales, on 20 October 1914. He transferred to the 4th Battalion at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, and was promoted to sergeant in July 1915. In August he was promoted to Lieutenant, shortly before he was killed at the battle of Lone Pine, between 6 and 9 August 1915. This portrait was painted in 1916 and so is likely to have been painted from a photograph.
