AWAS on the way to report for duty at L.H.Q. Signals
Description
George Browning was attached to the Military History Section during the Second World War. Initially, he was employed to contribute to the Army's Christmas book. Once this was completed, he was to be sent to New Guinea. During the weeks of training for the journey north, Browning decided to practice his skills by depicting home front scenes in Melbourne. These included tanks at the repair shops on Sturt Street, and the people and buildings at the Williamstown Rifle Range. This work features servicewomen of the Australian Women's Army Service on their way to report for duty at the Land Headquarters Signals in Melbourne.
