Description

Women volunteers in the ballroom at Federal Government House in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, sorting and packing items to be sent in parcels to troops at the front, some time during the First World War. Federal Government House was the Victorian headquarters of the Red Cross for some of the war, and was the central repository for the storage of goods sent in by local branches. The two women pictured are removing metal strips from packing boxes. The woman on the right is wearing her Red Cross apron, and the stacked boxes are marked with the distinctive Red Cross symbol.
