Major Thomas Grice
Description
Little is known about this portrait of Major Thomas Grice, which was completed by Australian artist James Quinn. It is likely this portrait was painted posthumously, and based on a photograph from 1915 that is the same in uniform and pose (see P08936.003 in the Memorial’s collection). Grice was an Australian, who had been educated at Geelong Grammar in Victoria and then later at Clifton College, England. He returned to Australia, but when war broke out he proceeded to England and obtained a permanent commission in British Army. In this portrait Grice wears the field uniform of the Scottish Rifles. Grice was killed near Albert, France in 1916.
