Reserves in the trenches
Description
Australian soldiers wait in the trenches at Passchendaele in Belgium. In the distance is a pall of smoke and ruined trees, hinting at what lies ahead for the soldiers. The Battle of Passchendaele was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. Power drew this image while as an official war artist attached to the 1st Division of the Australian Imperial Forces during the Passchendaele offensive. It was later exhibited in London in May-June 1918 in the first exhibition of Australian war art.
