Lieutenant General Arthur Percival
Description
Lieutenant General Arthur Ernest Percival, CB, DSO, OBE, MC, General Officer Commanding of British Commonwealth forces during the Battle of Malaya and Singapore. As commanding officer, Percival signed the surrender of Singapore on 15 February 1942, and in effect created 15,000 Allied prisoners of war. Percival himself was held as a POW at Changi, where Griffin completed this sketch. In August 1942, Percival and other senior officers were removed from Changi and sent to other camps across Asia. As a "VIP" prisoner, Percival was sent to Taiwan and then Manchuria. When the Japanese signed the terms of surrender in August 1945, Percival was present and stood just behind General MacArthur.
