Mergui landing stage, Burma
Description
A force of 3000 men left Singapore. Some of the Australians and Allied prisoners of war, under the command o NX34999 Colonel G.E. Ramsey, ED., who left Singapore on the 15 May, 1942. This move was decided on by the Japanese Army in order to spread the concentration of prisoners of war over a larger area and to supply land in other parts of the Japanese occupied areas. This shipment of prisoners was sent to Victoria Point, Mergui and Tavoy, all towns on the west coast. This drawings is a view of the landing stage and part of the town as seen from the transport ship as it approached the coast. In the left background can be seen the famous Golden Pagoda of the Buddist Faith.
