Aerial view of Changi POW Camp, Singapore Island
Description
The buildings were originally the barracks of the Gordon Highlanders, a regiment of the British Regular Army. The square and surrounding buildings were used by the Japanese to house all the Australian and Allied prisoners of war, captured at the capitulation of Singapore and was the scene of the infamous "Changi Square Incident", when all the prisoners of war were herded into this small area when they refused to give the Japanese Commander their assurance that they would not attempt to escape.
