Gracie Fields at Morotai
Description
Gracie Fields, English singing star of stage and radio, arrived at Morotai on 23 August 1945 on a RAAF transport aircraft. Met by Major R J Hardy, camp commandant; she was taken to the C-in-C's mess where she met Major General Clive S Steele, DSO, MC, VD, and had tea with General Blamey; she put on a show for the 2/5th Australian General Hospital on the 24th August and just before leaving, autographed a plaster cast on a patient's fractured leg. Gracie was accompanied by her husband, Monty Banks.
