Release of Indian POW
Description
The Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Barcoo accompanied by two Patrol Torpedo (PT) boats and an escort of Spitfires, rendezvoued off the coast of Miti Island, near Halmahera Island, with the Japanese. The Japanese handed over to the Australians one hundred and fifty three Indian prisoners of war (POW) most of whom were suffering from Beri-Beri, disentry and malnutrition. Captain W F Burton, a British officer of the Indian Army, officially receives the Indians from a senior Japanese Officer.
