Description

Adelaide River, Northern Territory, 24 April 1943. The first Army wedding in Northern Australia was held in a typical camp church at the 119th Australian General Hospital, built of bush timber with bamboo walls. The bride, SX24677 AANS Sister Heather Joan Woodhead, was given away by QX48750 Captain Michael Anthony Garrahy, RAA, and was attended by AANS Sister Dickman. The groom was NX56969 Lieutenant Maurice Carmel Timbs with Captain McManus as the best man. The nuptial mass and wedding ceremony was performed by Father H J Reid, Senior Chaplain. After the service and breakfast the bride and groom left to spend a honeymoon at Mr Byrns' cattle station Tipperary.
