Landings on Gloucester
Description
On Christmas Day 1943 the American 1st Marine Division sailed from New Guinea for Cape Gloucester. At dawn on the 26 December 1943, Australian and American naval units bombarded the landing beaches; aircraft bombed and strafed enemy positions behind the landing beaches. The 1st Marine Division then made an unopposed amphibious landing. The beaches were very narrow with waves breaking along jungle's edge. Includes shots of Australian War Correspondents who landed with the first wave. Correspondent Axel Oslen is identified.
