RAAF maritime aircraft from two squadrons are taking part in the largest maritme exercise ever held in New Zealand. Two Neptunes from 10 Squadron RAAF based at Townsville and two Orion from 11 Squadron RAAF, based at Edinburgh, South Australia have joined aircraft and ships from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. Thirteen ships, sixteen aircraft and three hundred men engaged in exercise "Longex 72". A RAAF Orion made one the first 'kills' of the exercise when it stalked and caught on the surface the USN submarine USS Trigger, part of the enemy force. The Orion straddled it with dummy bombs.
