Opening of the Beirut-Tripoli railway
Description
The railway had been constructed by Australian Railway Construction and Maintenance Group. On the 20th December 1942, General Sir Harold R L G Alexander, KCB, CSI, DSO, MC, Commander in Chief Middle East, opened the railway between Beirut and Tripoli at Dog River Gorge (Nahr-el-Kelb), Lebanon, thus completing the last link in the Cairo-London line. Other identified personnel M Alfred Naccahe, President of the Lebanon Republic; Major General Sir Edward Spears, KBE, CB, MC British Minister to the Republics of Syria and Lebanon.
