Tarakan landing
Description
The landing was made by troops of 26 Australian Infantry Brigade - "P" Day being 1 May, 1945. Prior to the landing, the shore was bombarded from the sea and air causing heavy clouds of black smoke from exploded ammunition dumps and oil storage tanks. VX141617 Private Earnest Edward Cooper, 12 Platoon, "B" Company, 2/23rd Australian Infantry Battalion, looking through binoculars. NX66687 Signaller (Sig) Maurice John Mason, NX67913 Sig David Langdale Wrathall and NX122160 Sig Reginald John Simmons moving past native cart left by Japanese to form road block.
