Description

On 21 February 1946, two thousand five hundred Japanese internees embarked on the repatriation ship Koei Maru at Port Melbourne, Vic. This was the first Japanese ship to arrive at an Australian port for the purpose of repatriating interned POW and civilians. The Japanese Government provided rations for the trip but there was no provision made for the many children travelling. The Australian Government provided twelve tons of powdered milk out of sympathy for the mothers. Normal capacity of the ship was two hundred. During the filming of scenes on board the Japanese ship, the Stirling Castle arrived bringing airmen, war brides and New Zealand troops from England.
