Arrival of Air Marshal G Jones CB, CBE, DFC in Japan
Description
On 22 July 1948 Air Marshal George Jones, Chief of Air Staff, RAAF, arrived at Iwakuni by RAAF Lincoln bomber aircraft. This particular Lincoln was all Australian-made, including the engines. This was also the first time a Lincoln bomber had landed in Japan. On his arrival A/M Jones inspected a Guard of Honour drawn from RAAF and 67 Australian Infantry Battalion. On 24 July 1948 A/M Jones flew on to Maneda airfield, Tokyo, where, with 34 (VX20321, VX80578) Lieutenant General Horace Clement Hugh Robertson, he inspected a guard of honour of RAAF and 65th Australian Infantry Battalion. Also identified: O36 Air Vice Marshal John Patrick Joseph McCauley; Flight Lieutenant F P Cotter, Guard Commander.
