Description

These scenes of Japanese POW patients were taken by Sergeant (Sgt) D C Hardy while he was a patient at the 2/1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station. The following is a transcription of Sgt Hardy's precis of story from the dope sheet. "Various shots of bandaged Japanese wounded. Hando Taro Hanazona in the opening scene spoke a little English which he learned from American and English men in his home town of Nagoya, Japan where he was employed in a cotton mill. He is a 1st Class Private and has been in the Japanese Army for 12 months. He came from Sandakan, South Borneo to Labuan Island, Borneo in April 1945. [He] is 27 years of age. [He] didn't know of Germany's defeat until he was told when he was taken prisoner at Labuan. He says food in the CCS is very good, -- far better than rice. He hadn't seen any Australian POWs on Labuan Island. (These wounded POWs stories I did especially for viewing after the War of the way we Australians treated Japs -- too much kindness indeed in my opinion. Treatment and amenities same as those received by Australian troops in CCS)." Other Japanese identified are: captured on Labuan; Fuka Yumata captured on Labuan by 9 Division Provost Company; Tanaka Yoshon captured on Brunei by Dyaks who cut off his ears; Corporal Fdachi captured on Labuan; Gushiken Besiche captured on Brunei 17 June 1945; Ishibai Shinji Limbang captured on Brunei on 18 June 1945 by natives; Kurinara Makoto captured on Brunei; Takayama captured on Brunei. Koyamah captured at Brunei; Nishi Junzo captured on Labuan Island.
