Description

For many weeks soldiers of 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), had passed the small Vietnamese village of Ong Huong as they patrolled the area between their Bien Hoa base and the Dong Nai River. The villagers had always greeted them with smiling faces and friendly gestures but the troops had no time to stop. In August elements of the battalion began making stops at the village for goodwill visits and further strengthened the friendship that was growing between them. Battalion cooks baked special cakes and the troops brought clothing and footware for the children. Sergeant Ivan Welsh of Newcastle NSW with small Vietnamese boy. Cameraman Warrant Officer Class 2 Bryan Dunne.
