The 31st Australian War Graves Unit's work in British North Borneo and Bougainville, 1945-1947.
Footage includes shots of: the township of Sandakan; local people; the waterfront; local craftwork; Australian soccer team plays against local team; local trademen; Sandakan Police Station; street signage; Bill Macfarlane and Col Simpson of ABC/Reuters; the POW camp; POW hats and gear; villages; the War Graves' staff accomodation; team mate Peter Beaumont, responsible for signwriting the commemorative wooden crosses; locals climbing trees and obtaining coconut milk; Sandakan Harbour; leper settlement; Javanese house workers; traditional muscians and dancers; a trip up the Labuk River; Dawang; villagers pounding rice; Dusan; Sopi, Lieutenant Sticpewich leading the Graves' party, searching for remains of Australian POWs; drinking Tapi (tapioca wine); being dragged upstream in the canoe (the river being too shallow for paddling); butchering a wild deer and preserving the meat; trading barges; Dyaks; "native helpers" assisting to search the grass and scrub for POW remains; conversing with locals in Malay where possible; wearing clothes made of pulverised bark; Chinese and local labourers; Javanese cooking; cemetary on the POW-built airstrip (?) laying out crosses, most of which are for unknown POW's; ANZAC Day Service, 1947; 2nd O.C.
