Portrait of Lieutenant Mackenzie Macdonald. Macdonald enlisted in the AIF on 29 August 1914 and was an original member of the 4th Battalion. He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, was promoted to corporal the next day and evacuated from Gallipoli sick. He did not rejoin his unit in Egypt until 1916. He was subsequently posted to the 56th Battalion and sailed for France. He was promoted to sergeant just before the disastrous attack at Fromelles. He was commissioned on 30 September 1917, after completing officer cadet training at Cambridge. The then Sergeant Macdonald was awarded the Italian Bronze Medal for Military Valour (Al Valore Militare) (AVM), one of only 32 Australians to receive this award. He was also Mentioned in Despatches.
