Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Clarence Herbert Dakin, 5th Machine Gun Company, of Woodford, NSW. An orchardist prior to enlistment, Lt Dakin initially enlisted as a Private (Pte) with the 20th Battalion and embarked from Sydney on HMAT Berrima on 25th June 1915. After progressing to the rank of Sergeant, he was transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company where he gained promotion to 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt). After promotion to Lieutenant, he was killed in action near Noreuil, France. He was buried where he fell, however, as there was no trace of his gravesite found, he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
