Osiaini Mohikanie [The old Glory]
A darkly humorous portrait of Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler adrift at sea in a leaky barrel. A miserable and bedraggled Hitler stares at the viewer, his uniform torn and missing all its finery. Himmler, in full uniform with cracked glasses, still looks towards his leader for advice. The barrel is symbolic of the crumbling Third Reich and inscribed 'Deutsches Reich' and with swastikas and the insignia of the SS. A ragged German Flag flies off the barrel in the background. The print has been mounted on dark grey card. A title in Polish with an English and French translation is printed bottom centre, beneath the image, in gold ink.
The original drawing reproduced in this offset lithograph was created by Polish artist Stanislaw Toegel (1905-1953) while in a Displaced Persons or D P camp at Osnabrück, Germany. During his time there he contributed further drawings and articles for a journal circulated amongst the DP camps.
