Description

Caricature of the ' Three German Gods' ; Heinrich Hinmmler, Adolf Hitler and Hermann Goring, making a desparate last stand in defence of Berlin. The three leaders stand together in what looks like a medieval castle turret. Himmler on the left of the image has a wooden club in his left hand and a shield in his right. The emblem on his shield is obscured by a bleeding skeletal figure symbolising Germany. Hitler in the centre of the trio is wielding a broken broadsword and defending himself with a circular shield inscribed with a black swastika. On the right Hermann Goring, in his Reichsmarschall uniform, clutches an axe in his left hand and a shield inscribed with a black runic symbol. In the background behind the three leaders are hundreds of German Army troops with their hands up in the act of surrender. Inscribed in German text printed in black in the lower right corner is 'BERLIN! Wir Kapiulieren NIE!' [Berlin! We will not capitulate]. The print has been mounted on dark grey card. A title in German is printed bottom centre, beneath the image, in gold ink. There are no Polish, English or French titles for this image.

The original drawing reproduced in this offset lithograph was created by Polish artist Stanislaw Toegel (1905-1953) while held in a German labour camp at Gotteningen.
