Notebook of Vivian Agincourt Spence Little, 1914
Notebook relating to the First World War service of Chaplain Vivian Agincourt Spence Little, Royal Australian Navy. This notebook contains entries relating to Little’s service on HMAS Sydney and includes: various sketch maps, including one of the route that HMAS Sydney took through Saint George’s Channel in the Bismarck Archipelago whilst serving in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF); a plan of the first Australian Imperial Force (AIF) convoy which HMAS Sydney escorted; Little’s experiences at sea on HMAS Sydney from its arrival in Albany on 31 October 1914 until the engagement with SMS Emden; a detailed account of the engagement between HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden on 9 November 1914 off the Cocos Islands and the aftermath of the battle. It is unknown where the notebook and its contents were written and compiled but much of it is likely to have been made whilst Little was at sea in 1914.
