File relating to the First World War service of Major General John Monash, 3rd Australian Division. This file consists of one bound volume of letters transcribed in 1934 with the contents ranging in dates from 24 December 1914 to 4 March 1917. These letters cover Monash's departure from Australia in 1914; his time in Egypt, the landing at Gallipoli, the death of John Simpson, his time at Gallipoli up until the evacuation included his break in Mudros and Alexandria in 1915; ANZAC Day, the Suez Canal Zone defences at Serepeum, moving the 4th Brigade to France, the review of the troops by the King, his time in England, the moving of the 3rd Division to France in 1916 and condition in France in early 1917. The last letter in this volume is continued in Volume 2.
