Letters and telegram from Wilfred Denver Gallwey to his family, 1916
Letters and telegram from 2430 Lance Corporal Wilfred Denver Gallwey, 52nd Battalion. In 1916, Gallwey wrote several letters to his family detailing his voyage to England and his training after he arrived. In these letters he begins by writing of life aboard the troopship HMAT Seang Choon and his experiences at the various locations the troopship docks at, including his time at Durban. While at Durban, Gallwey writes of the hospitality of the local population and time spent with his uncle and his family, his uncle offering him a live monkey to use as a unit mascot. He also writes of the Australian soldiers taking over the troopship to prevent it from departing Durban until conditions were improved, and the comparatively cold reception the Australians received when they docked at Cape Town. Gallwey also comments on the poor behaviour of the troops at Dakar. After arriving in England, he writes of his training at Codford, including an extract and poem pertaining to life at Codford, and his disappointment when the plebiscite on conscription in 1916 fails.
