Small distorted barbed wire picket : Bullecourt
Description
Barbed wire picket with a circular twist at one end, bent and distorted along its shaft and corroded, with evidence of mud and dirt accretion.
History / Summary
This picket was one of millions produced during the war, on which barbed wire was strung, as a means of slowing down the enemy, protecting ones own positions, and of channelling the enemy into 'killing zones'. The picket has a pig tail twist to one end: this allowed it to be screwed noislessly into soft earth. This example was recovered from the Bullecourt area.
