Gillogly, John “Jack” (Private, b.1918-d.1942)
Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX72989 Private John “Jack” Gillogly, 2/19 Australian Infantry Battalion, Malaya, 1941.
Collection consists of one letter from Private Gillogly to his brother Tom, dated 23 December 1941. In his letter, Gillogly mentions being stationed in fortified trenches in the jungle, seeing many Japanese bombers overhead, preparing for the Japanese infantry to come, Singapore being bombed, being issued tinned food and beer for Christmas, the sinking of two Allied battleships, the evacuation of nearby villages, and being on guard duties.
Private Gillogy was killed in action at Malaya on 19 January 1942.
