Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 5180 Private Edwin Henry Need, 59th Australian Infantry Battalion, 15th Brigade, 5th Division, AIF. Collection consists of an original handwritten diary kept by Pte Need, and written up from earlier notes in 1933. The collection also consists of a book entitled "A Soldier on the Somme, 1916-1918: Diary of Pte Edwin Henry Need, 59th Battalion AIF", which is a transcription of the diary as transcribed by Joan Scott. The diary and book contain detailed entries and cover Pte Need's initial posting to Egypt, training in England, his active service in France on the Western Front, and his being wounded.
